  • About Us

The Chubu Institute for Advanced Studies was established in 1996 as the first “University Collaborative Research Facility” belonging to a private university. The initial 10 year history of the institute is generally divided into the following three periods:

During the first period (1996-2000), under director Hidetoshi Kato, the main research theme was about Asia.

During the second period (2001-March, 2003), under director Kimihide Mushanokoji, the main research theme was human security.

The third period started in April, 2003 when Chancellor Atsuo Iiyoshi became the director. “Reconstruction of Knowledge” was adopted as the new research theme, with an initial focus on integration of the humanities and science – “Hakaru” – was adopted. “Hakaru – Hakari Hakarareru Sekai,“ was published in 2007.

Since 2007, based on the academic achievements of Chubu University related to the environment, disaster prevention, manufacturing, energy conservation, health, and biodiversity, the collaborative project “Education for Sustainable Development,” as well as the project for considering improvement of the higher education “Considering Higher Education – based on the outcomes” have been conducted.

In addition, International Digital Earth Applied Science Research Center (IDEAS) was established in April, 2011 and the International ESD Center became the affiliated organization of the Chubu Institute for Advanced Studies in June, 2011. (In April, 2019 it has changed to the International ESD/SDGs Center.) In 2014 IDEAS was accredited as a Joint Usage/Research Center by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Furthermore, Center for Sustainable Development and Global Smart City was established as the third affiliated center in 2018.

Going forward, we hope to collaborate extensively with researchers, governments and civil society with the aim of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We appreciate your understanding and support in these endeavors.
